HGST, a Western Digital company, has launched a new hard disk drive for laptop and mobile PCs that boasts the highest storage density within the smallest size mobile HDD available. The Travelstar 5K1500 HDD is the first 9.5 mm, 1.5TB hard drive, using a three-platter design and providing 50 percent more capacity per millimeter than current 1 TB, 9.5 mm drives. 

With a 6 Gbps SATA interface and 32 MB cache buffer, plus 5,400 RPM performance, the new Travelstar drives are designed to be used in notebooks and laptops, all-in-one desktop PCs, gaming consoles or, in an enclosure as an external hard drive, providing plenty of storage capacity in a small, highly portable package. 

The drive is designed for OEMs and system integrators to integrate the drive into nearly any system accepting a 9.5mm drive, meaning that consumers may be using the new HGST drive in desktop and notebook systems from a variety of manufacturers. 

Other features include: 

– super operating and non-operating shock tolerance to protect against bumps and rough handling that may be experienced during travel

The original HGST Travelstar 5K1500 is shipping this month, with an Enhanced Availability model and a self-encrypting model slated for availability toward the end of the year.
