The Next Phase of Flash Memory: 3D NAND Flash

solidstatedrives

Samsung® is leading the race in the development of solid state drives (SSD) using 3D NAND Flash memory, but rivals Toshiba and Micron are hot on the manufacturer’s heels.
What’s the big deal about 3D flash?

3D NAND Flash: Surpassing Physical Limitations
Flash memory has already met or surpassed Moore’s Law, the technology rule that stated the number of transistors on integrated circuits doubles every two years and has since broadened to indicate that the performance of a technology (whether that means, speed, storage capacity or some other measurement) will double every two years.
Since the development of NAND flash in 1980, storage capacity has expanded to 64 thousand times the original.
However, conventional, 2D flash is nearing the end of this rapid growth period due to technological limitations relating to the size of the control electrodes and the gates within each floating gate transistor.
3D NAND flash overcomes this problem by creating more room to move vertically, by storing the charge not on a floating gate, but on an embedded film of silicon nitride. The film is thicker and more robust, minimizing the possibilities of read/write errors.

3D NAND: Bigger, Faster, Greener
3D NAND flash offers more than just theoretically greater storage capacity and more reliability. Samsun’s new 3D V-NAND flash memory is purported to read and write twice as fast as 2D NAND chips, last 10 times longer and also use 50 percent less power. Bigger, faster, and greener… it’s hard to ask for more from the next evolution of storage media.

What’s Next?
Samsung’s V-NAND flash is available in the company’s 480 GB and 960GB solid state drives as samples for enterprise level customers. Meanwhile, competitors lag a bit behind.

Toshiba just completed construction on a new flash fabrication facility at its Yokkaichi Operations facility in Mie Prefecture and, according to news releases, commercial production is expected to begin on 3D NAND flash in 2014, with some prototypes already in existence.

In this news release, (http://www.simmtester.com/page/news/shownews.asp?num=15522) Micron executives said that production of 3D NAND flash should begin in early 2014, as well.

It’s safe to say that by early 2015, if not sooner, 3D NAND flash will be available from a choice of manufacturers in solid state drives available for enterprise-level and home use.
